Record a Skill can turn anything you do on repeat into automation — here's how

Most people think using AI well means getting better at writing prompts. That's true right up until you hit a task you do the same way every single week, the kind where you don't even think about the steps anymore, you just do it. For that kind of task, Claude has a feature that skips the prompt entirely. It's called Record a Skill, and it works by watching you do the thing once.

Feature 01: Turn a screen recording into a rerunnable skill

Record a Skill is a demonstration-to-automation feature inside Claude's Cowork mode. Instead of describing a task in words, you perform it on your screen while Claude records and narrates it back, and Claude turns that recording into a Skill it can run again on its own.

This matters most for the tasks that are hard to explain but easy to do. Think about anything where the actual steps live in your hands, not in a clean set of instructions, like a client debrief format, an intake process, a way you always clean up a spreadsheet before sending it out.

How to do it:

  1. Start a Cowork task and open the plus menu. Inside any Cowork session, select the + menu and choose Record a Skill.

  2. Do the task exactly like you normally would. Don't perform for the camera, just work. Open the files you'd normally open, click through it the way you actually do it.

  3. Narrate your reasoning as you go. Say out loud why you're doing each step, especially the judgment calls and exceptions. This is what Claude uses to understand the rules behind the task, not just the clicks.

  4. Let Claude convert the recording into a Skill. Once you finish, Claude builds the Skill from what it watched and heard.

  5. Test it on a fresh example before you trust it. Run the new Skill on a real task and check the output before you let it run unsupervised.

Feature 02: Why this beats writing instructions yourself

Most automation tools ask you to describe a process in advance, which means you have to already know exactly how to explain it. Record a Skill flips that. You don't write the instructions, you just do the work, and Claude reverse-engineers the instructions from watching you.

This is the gap that trips up most business owners trying to delegate or automate: the process lives in your head, not on paper. This feature doesn't ask you to write it down first.

Feature 03: Where this is genuinely useful for a small business

A few places this pays off fast: turning a weekly client debrief into a Skill that runs itself after every call, teaching Claude your exact intake process so a new hire (or Claude itself) can run it consistently, or capturing the specific way you reconcile invoices so it's not trapped in your head as the one thing only you know how to do.

Try It This Week

Pick one task you did more than twice this week without thinking about it. Open a Cowork session, hit the + menu, choose Record a Skill, and just do the task while narrating your reasoning out loud.

Starter prompt once you're in the recording: "I'm going to walk through how I [task]. I'll explain what I'm doing and why as I go, including anything I'd normally skip or do differently depending on the situation."
